So you’ve decided to get your practice online but you’re clueless when it comes to picking a domain name for your website. Should it be the dentist’s name, the name of the practice (if different), something creative (e.g., guaranteedsmiles.com, painlesssmiles.com) or something else altogether?

You guessed it! It’s something else, and why is that?

While branding your dental web site with your practice name or your personal name is tempting, it will not help you when it comes to finding your website online. Why? Because people typically will go to Google or their favorite search engine and search using keyword phrases such as “your city (or town) + dentist”, “dentist + your city (or town)”, “your city (or town) + dentists”, “your city (or town) + dentistry”, etc. You see where I’m going, right? Typically, they will not be searching for your name or practice name because nine times out of ten, they don’t know it. Plus, something you may not know is that Google gives your website a boost in the rankings if it contains the keyword phrase that was used in the search query. So if someone is searching for a dentist in Phoenix and types “phoenix dentist” into the search field, your website rankings will be given a boost if your domain name contains the search phrase “phoenixdentist”. In competitive regions, you’ll need to add other qualifiers such as “my” or “best” to get a domain name that is not already taken.

Great dental website designs for any budget that you and your staff can update and that also include our Fundamental SEO (search engine optimization) package, too!

This is not where we convince you of the benefits of a dental website. Quite frankly, if you have an existing practice in today’s environment, you NEED a website. The general public expects today’s dentists to have dental websites. They will use your dental web site to access contact information, to browse services that you provide, to determine the insurance you accept, to get directions on how to get to your office or what address to plug into their GPS, etc. And, due to changing demographics, your practice MUST be on the web because many of today’s adults, especially young adults, only access businesses like yours through the Internet, via their computers and mobile phones. Phone directories are fast becoming a thing of the past (check out our post No Yellow Pages, No Land Lines…Now What for more information on that issue).

These days Numont Dental Marketing focuses our dental web site design and development using the WordPress platform. Why? Because it gives our clients the most value for their investment. Wordpress started out as blog software years ago but has now evolved into a full-fledged Content Managment Solution (CMS) which means that you, your administrative assistants, or whoever else you select to manage the website can add to or edit content on your website with minimal training. Gone are the days where you had to contact your web designer for each and every modification you wanted to make on your website. If you can use word-processing software, you can easily make changes to your website.

And we have a perfect solution for your practice, whatever your budget. You can get started for as little as $500 for a professional dental website that effectively promotes your practice to your local market. Contact us for more information on our dental website packages and make sure you ask us about our very special dental web site design approach that we call “In Your Own Words.” It’s our very own exclusive method of designing dental websites with a personal appeal.

But we don’t stop there and this, quite frankly, is what sets us apart from the rest of the firms that design dental websites…because each and every dental website that we design is also optimized for the search engines. That’s right! You see, it’s our philosophy that not only should you have a dental website that looks great but your patients and prospective patients should be able to find it, too! So included with every one of our websites is our Fundamental SEO (search engine optimization) package. You won’t find another dental website designer offering this…we guarantee it. But we do it because your dental web site should be visible, not buried.

Contact us now to learn more about how we make dental websites visible in the major search engines!

Know the exact keywords that prospective patients are using to search for dentists and dental services!

Target the right keywords and dominate your local market…

Get it wrong and bury your website with the millions of other “invisible” sites

Great visibility in the search engines begin with targeting the right keywords. Unfortunately, most websites are designed with no consideration given to keywords and good search engine rankings. However, this is good news for those of you who arm yourself with the knowledge of exactly what keywords prospects are using to find your dental services.

Now you can get a list of nearly 500 keyword phrases for your dental practice showing exactly what words prospects search for. Not only do you get the daily search volume in this list, but you also get competitive information showing the numbers of websites that are targeting the same keyword. Why is that important? Because in almost every case when analyzing keywords, you’ll uncover some “hidden” keywords with relatively low competition but sizeable search volume, which are pure gold to your practice.

And if that isn’t enough, you’ll also get an Online Commerical Indication (OCI) factor for each keyword phrase. Why this is important is that it gives you an idea of whether a person is simply searching for information or whether they have intent to “buy.”

Armed with this list, you’ll be able to 1) target keywords for your dental website that have sufficient daily search volume, 2) focus on keywords used by patients who are doing more than just researching info – they’re looking for a new dentist; and 3) identify those keywords that you can realistically rank for, not the highly competitive terms that are virtually impossible to rank for.

In addition to this comprehensive Dental Keyword List, you’ll also get step-by-step video instruction on how to effectively use this keyword list to begin getting more visibility for your website by patients looking for a new dentist. Website owners have seen their websites go from obscurity to the front page of Google by using just one of the techniques that we show you in the videos…find out what that is for just $27.

Now, if you’re able to make the changes to your own website or have a designer that will do it for you, great! All you’ll need to do is buy the Dental Keyword Analysis product, download the list and watch the videos to improve your search engine visibility. On the other hand, if you’d prefer to have us do the work for you, just let us know.

Unfortunately, many websites are designed with no attention given to keyword analysis and search engine visibility. Our feelings are – if your web design team does nothing about keyword analysis or doesn’t do any fundamental search engine optimization (SEO), then they’re designing an incomplete website. After all, what good is a great looking website if no one can see it?

Over the next five days we’ll be taking you through what you need to do to get your dental website to the top of Google rankings and dominate your local market. When you know what’s important to Google and you optimize your website for that, you’ll experience the benefits, sometimes within hours, by enjoying top rankings in Google. Now, please understand, we’re focusing on Google because it has the strictest requirements. You do what makes Google happy and the other search engines (e.g., Yahoo, MSN, etc.) will follow.

Day 1 – You’ll find out what the most important factor is in getting top search results. Plus, we’re giving you a list of nearly 500 keywords that people use when looking for dentists and dental services along with their corresponding daily search count.

Day 2 – Learn the fundamentals of search engine optimization (SEO). On Day2 you’ll find out about the two main areas that make up SEO and what you can do to directly influence the ranking of your dental website. This tactic alone is responsible for some website owners to see sudden first page results only hours after they’ve made changes discussed in this lesson.

Day 3 – This day you’ll learn that even Google rewards those who are the most popular.

Google just announced that it is providing local search results on all of its searches. Is your website primed to take advantage of this new feature?

Google announced on April 6, 2009, that it is now providing “local content” on all of its search results, according to its official blog.

In a post on its official blog Google wrote, “We like to make search as easy as we can, so we’ve just finished the worldwide rollout of local search results on a map, which will now appear even when you don’t type in a location. When you search on Google, we will guess where you are and show results near you.”

So how do they do that? According to Google, “In most cases, we match your IP address to a broad geographical location. You can also specify your likely location using the “Change location” link on the top right corner, above the map. We try to make our guesses as good as they can be so that whether you’re shopping for [groceries], [sporting goods] or [flowers], or looking for your [bank], your [gym], or the [post office], you can just say what you want, and we’ll try to find it right where you are.”

This is big news for dentists and great news for dentists who have optimized their websites for the local markets. Did you know that Google gives you the opportunity to upload coupons, images, and videos to your local listings? They also provide reviews. Do you have any? Can’t you see how valuable good reviews are for people who go looking for a dentist online? In essence, it’s a referral. And if you have any negative referrals, that will impact your practice, too.

Find out how you can get started right now utilizing this new local search feature to your advantage!

Dental websites are absolutely necessary in today’s wired world. Unfortunately, creating the perfect dentist website that’s right for your practice is only getting at half of the issue. Just as important and some would argue more important is to get favorable search engine visibility, which means first page search engine ranking for your website. Think about it, with billions of web pages indexed on the internet, what’s the chance that prospective patients and even existing patients will be able to find your website if you’re competing with the masses. Luckily, you can give tremendous advantage to your website if you do some search engine optimization.

SEO for Dental Websites

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is made of two major elements: 1) on-page optimization and 2) off-page optimization. On-page optimization has to do with what you can do within your own website to improve the search engine rankings of your site. It includes the title of individual webpages within your website, what you put in your headings, the text that makes up the links, the tags if you’re using a blog, etc. Off-page optimization is a bit trickier. It involves getting links from other sites to your website and the search engines consider it a popularity contest of sorts. For instance, if your website has lots of links from other websites, the search engines believe that it must be a quality site and gives you a boost in your website ranking.

The basis for SEO is your choice of keywords. These are the terms people enter in the search engines. Basically, you want to pick the keywords people are searching for the most and place them on your website, then get lots of links from other websites to your website using those same keywords. Now this should not be a guessing game. There are tools you can use to identify the keywords that people use to find dental sites. Would you like a copy of those terms?

Fortunately, because few dental websites are optimized even for on-page elements, in many cases by just making those on-page changes along with local “modifiers” you may see big jumps in your rankings and even first page rankings for some keyword combinations.

Quick Start Recommendation: Determine the popular keyword phrases for dental practice searches (click here for a comprehensive list). Then make the necessary on-page changes to optimize your website for those popular keywords. Don’t know whether your site has been optimized or not? This quick video will show you how to quickly tell. Don’t want to do it yourself or don’t have a designer? We’d be happy to help.

Years ago the Yellow Pages had a monopoly on search in the home. If you needed to find a business you would go directly to the yellow pages and start your search there.

Fast forward into our wired world…now in one home alone you’ll find multiple PC’s, smart phones with Internet access, interactive TV, a wireless laptop, 2 itouches…and Google is on all of them. Just from an ease of use standpoint, what do you think people will choose to do? Go looking for a phone book only to page through hundreds of tiny flat ads? Or go to the Internet, type what they’re looking for, and voila…in a matter of seconds get a list from which to choose with links to websites, maps and even reviews.

Not to mention, now both Google and Yahoo are rolling out local services positioning themselves to become today’s online “Yellow Pages.” Currently, you can get listed on these local services free of charge, which is a big change to the big bucks needed for a Yellow Page listing. I suspect that it’s only a matter of time after their databases become adequately populated that these will become paid services. Are you listed? Want to know how?

And I haven’t even mentioned the fact that many young people are opting for cell phones only and not even getting landlines these days. This wired generation who prefers the Internet over all other traditional media for its info needs, complicated by no landlines and no Yellow Pages, means problems for the dental practice that is relying on the marketing methods of old.

But don’t just take my word. See what others are saying -

What is the Real Yellow Pages Story?

Yellow Pages Usage Stats Are Likely Wrong

Yellow Pages May Go the Way of the Dinosaurs

Yellow Page Companies Sinking into Oblivion

The point to the post? The Yellow Pages are still viable for reaching older generations, but use is declining. The search engines are busy populating their local databases and offering features that pale in comparison to the phone directory of old. If your primary mode of marketing is a Yellow Page ad, you need to increase your marketing efforts online; otherwise, you’ll be missing big sectors of your market.

In an economic downturn, many dentists need to increase dental marketing efforts to maintain the flow of patients and income. Although some practices cut costs, even more increase spending on dental practice marketing programs, according to a recent survey by The Wealthy Dentist.

Many dentists are increasing dental marketing budgets as a direct result of the slumping economy, reveals a recent survey by dental practice marketing resource The Wealthy Dentist. Thirty-eight percent of dentists reported they had increased dental marketing, while 33% said they had cut spending and were tightening their belts.

According to the survey, specialists were cutting spending while general dentistry practices were increasing their marketing efforts. Although requests for cosmetic dentistry may decrease in an ailing economy, patients still need ongoing dental care. In fact one dentist even found an upside ti the recession, “I am doing more crowns from people breaking their teeth due to stress! It compensates for the decrease in dental patient numbers.”

No one really knows the impact that this economic slowdown will have, but there is a collective level of worry, according to the survey. “I have been through a few of these downturns in 40 years, but never like this. I am afraid it’s going to be a real nasty one this time,” fretted a California dentist. “The economy is scary! I have not taken a paycheck for two months, and I have a newborn and 3-year-old. Though I have kids to feed, it is all is going into external and Internal marketing!” said an Illinois dentist.

Most dental practices see no choice but to increase marketing. “We know that marketing is more important in economic downtimes, so we will be increasing marketing budget on our website, print advertising, and direct mail,” said a California periodontist.

Some dentists cautioned against too much dental practice advertising. “Dentistry is mostly elective in nature. People will still buy, but based on their perceived need, not our need to sell them treatments,” warned a Virginia dentist.

What’s more, in strong economies and weak ones, dentists must avoid the temptation to “sell” patients on additional treatments. Patients want to feel safe while in the dentist chair and do not want to be lectured to or get the “hard sell.” There’s nothing worse for a patient than feeling pressure and vulnerability while sitting mouth-opened and helpless in a dentist chair. Most certainly a hard-selling dentist will see patients fleeing their practice. Instead, dentists should opt for delivering content minus the sales pitch through their website and email message sequences.

Internal marketing is very effective in tough economic times. Many dentists are culling their patient lists and providing incentives to patients to get them back to the dentist. According to one Minnesota dentist, “We have reviewed all of our charts to reactivate patients who haven’t been in for a while.”

“It’s a brutal economy out there, but it warms my heart that so many dentists are embracing dental practice marketing in these tough times,” said Jim Du Molin, dental practice management consultant and founder of dental continuing education website The Wealthy Dentist. “Of course no one wants to spend more money, but when the alternative leaves you going out of business, how much choice does a financially savvy dentist really have?”
